The Way We FallThe Way We Fall by Megan Crewe

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I went into this book believing it was a dystopian/end of days with a deadly virus. It ended up not being dystopian, which I was disappointed about for a little bit (only because of my love of dystopians). However, I liked the different perspective of this book. There is a crazy virus and it is happening right now. Not in the future. What would happen if a crazy strand of the flu started infecting people in a small area where there were not enough supplies, not enough people to help contain it and the virus just ran rampant? In the midst of that, what would happen if there were teenagers who were trying to help their friends and family and their neighbors?

I saw incredible growth of Kaelyn, the main character, from the beginning of the story all the way through the end. I loved that she was willing to get out of her comfort zone to ask questions, whether they were medical or personal. It is hard to sometimes voice those hard questions. Despite the fact that a crazy virus was killing people everywhere and it is not a normal situation, I think it really showed that it is important to ask those questions regardless if you are a normal teenager going through your everyday routine or if you are a teenager stuck on an island where a virus is killing everyone you know.

Despite the chaos that was happening on the island, I really liked the romance aspect of this book. I thought it was realistic and gave a smidgen of hope to a hopeless situation.

There were two things that I didn’t like about this story. 1. I could not for the life of me figure out where this story was set and it drove me crazy! That may or may not have been on purpose. I finally had to let it go. Maybe we will find out in the next book? 2. The story did drag a bit in the middle. But I at the same time, I think I was just super anxious to see a resolution to something! If a virulent strand of the flu actually took over, there might not be resolution; so even though I was ready for something to happen, that might not be the reality of the situation.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy of this book.

  1. Have you seen the movie Contagion? It makes you want to wash your hands a million times, then never touch anything again.

  2. No I have not seen that movie! I am pretty sure it would scare me for life. This is why I just read books about crazy mutant viruses. I can remove myself from the situation that way. :)
