St. Patty's Day Storytime 2012

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
How exciting that storytime fell on the holiday!

Books:
Horray for St. Patrick's Day by Joan Holub

This book was extra fun since a leprechaun was hiding on every page.  We all had to look to find that sneaky leprechaun.

The Story of the Leprechaun by Katherine Tegen

The Last Snake in Ireland by Sheila MacGill-Callahan

Instead of reading this book I did a dramatic retelling.  We had stuffed snakes that got thrown around for a bit and a box for St. Patrick to trick the sneaky snake into.

5 Little Shamrocks found at My Preschool Corner

5 Little Shamrocks lying in the grass

Along came a leprechaun skipping down the path.
He took a shamrock and put it on a door
That’s for good luck and that leaves 4!

4 little shamrocks lying in the grass
Along came a leprechaun skipping down the path.
He pinned a shamrock for all to see
That’s for good luck and now there are 3!

3 Little Shamrocks lying in the grass
Along came a leprechaun skipping down the path.
He picked it up and put it on his shoe
That’s for good luck and now there are 2!

2 Little Shamrocks lying in the grass
Along came a leprechaun skipping down the path.
He picked one up and held it towards the sun
That’s for good luck and now there is 1!

1 little shamrock lying in the grass
He left it lying there so there’d always be one.
That’s for good luck!

He Lived Under a Rainbow (to the tune of B-I-N-G-O) found at DLTK Holiday's

There was a little leprechaun,

He lived under a rainbow.

R - A - I - N - 'bow'
R - A - I - N - 'bow'
R - A - I - N - 'bow'

He lived under a rainbow.

Action Song:

I'm a Little Shamrock also found at DLTK Holiday's page.
I'm a little shamrock look at me
oh what color can I be
If you said that I was the color green
then stand right up and YELL
YIPPEE!

Crafts and Activites:
We played Leprechaun Bingo for a few rounds and then they started on their craft. I had originally bought the Shamrock Wreath craft from Oriental Trading.  But when I opened it I saw how many tiny little pieces that were involved in the craft and just how much glue was required.  So I sent those home. :)  Instead the backup craft was the Magic Color Shamrock Craft.  I do have to be honest that as of late my experience with Oriental Trading and their quality has been anything but great.  It makes me very sad.  I think it is time that I start looking elsewhere.

Everyone went home with a the wreath craft and a few holiday cookies.  It was a fun day had by all.

Like the gold of the sun,
Like the light of the day,
May the luck of the Irish
Shine bright on your way-
Like the glow of a star
And the lilt of a song,
May these be your joys
All your life long.
